Research studies state people remember 80% of what they see, and merely 20% of what they read, in an average day. To ensure your information is retained by recruiters who look at numerous resumes at a time, it is important to present it in a way that both attracts attention and makes an impression.

Recruiters can decide within six seconds of looking at a resume to decide whether to call a candidate for an interview, so it is imperative the job seeker create a compelling resume that makes an impression that affects the selection.

Maintain career chronology - how relevant is your experience to the job/clients.

The key details your resume needs to clearly display
• your name, and contact details
• current title and company,
• current position start and end dates,
• previous title and company,
• previous position start and end dates, and
• Education.

Resumes for senior level positions will have different structure and information compared to a new freshly graduated candidate entering the job market. Both have to stand out from the rest of the applicants, but the information that a recruiter seeks for will be different in both cases.

Points to remember while making your resume:
• Use infographics to show the above information, to indicate duration, various categories of skills.
• Use an efficient layout that makes it easy to read, at a glance.
• Re-check for grammatical and spelling errors.
• Information that has no bearing on the profile, such as marital status, offspring, should not be included.

So what should IT professionals keep in mind while making their resume?

1. Avoid Traditional/Customary Resume Objectives
Writing a resume summary or an objective like "to grow professionally and enhance my skills in a forward-thinking company" will not hold good here. It is too general.
We suggest you use a resume headline that contains the job title you are applying to, eg: "Mid-Level PhP Developer," at the top of your resume.

2. Sort Your Technical Competencies
Taking keywords from the job description, so its shows your profile is relevant. You can sort them like this:
• Languages
• Operating Systems
• Tools
• Methodologies
• Protocols

Important: Even if you have had come across other kinds of programming and networking, only put the skills relevant to your target position. Add extra skills here is not required.

If you are still entry level don't mention things you aren't fully familiar with, unless it's workable knowledge.

3. Highlight Your Learning in the Experience Section
Since most of your IT experience is through your educational qualifications, this is the place to highlight your college/course background.
Mention all the courses undertaken, number of hours of training you and the particular technologies you learned.

Important: Mention in detail any hands-on projects you completed as part of your training, as below.

IT (Comp Sc)
Inventory Assessment Project: Developed intelligent user interface to analyse competing priorities, financial/resource constraints and schedule considerations & determine costs and benefits of change requests in inventory using Java, Oracle 12c, SQL, and Perl. Awarded highest grade for quality and punctual completion.

With this detail, you can showcase the IT experience you gained as part of your education. Make sure to include these projects in the Projects section of your LinkedIn Profile also.

4. Stress Transferable Skills
Many professionals fail to understand this is important too, in case you have held non-IT jobs. Use this experience to highlight the core skills you demonstrated that can be relevant to this particular job as well, especially if it is an entry-level IT position.

An employer will always prefer good communication skills.
Other important traits that employers look for are:
• Ability to work independently or in a team
• Customer-oriented mentality
• TAT maintained
• Attention to quality and accuracy
• Ability to switch between multiple tasks and priorities

5. Add Testimonials or references
By including testimonials from professors or employers adds a special attraction to your resume. Adding "XYZ is efficient at handling customer service who delivered to the customer" makes a greta impact on recruiters.

6. Confirm Qualifications by LinkedIn profile
Most employers now conduct online search for job candidates and may verify the profile in LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the best place to be professionally visible for your career and to show your authenticity.
